    A Day in the Life of a Principal Software Engineer:


    This position is responsible for the design, development, implementation and support for Meridian Health Plan’s business application software solutions. This position works with project stakeholders to assess business requests and develops a deep understanding of the application. This position participates in all facets of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and their expertise is leveraged within each phase to optimize the delivery of software. This position actively participates and proposes architectural design. This position acts a mentor to other software engineers and provides leadership, as needed, for the application engineering team.


    • Review, analyze, construct, and modify business application systems
    • Provide support, feedback and actively participate in the definition of business and functional requirements
    • Develop, document, and implement solution designs
    • Work with architects, engineers, database administrators, business analysts, quality assurance analysts/engineers, and delivery leads in project delivery and solving technical issues
    • Engage Architecture Team to propose new or updated core architecture
    • Participate in functional design sessions
    • Perform code reviews
    • Ensure that deliverables meet or exceed functional, technical, and performance requirements
    • Follow and enhance established design, development, source code management, and deployment processes
    • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues
    • Provide leadership and mentoring to other engineers
    • Provide on-call support and duties
    • Meet task deadlines while maintaining high quality of deliverables
    • Assume ownership of software through its lifecycle
    • Perform other duties as assigned



    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related area or Technical Training Certification is required
    • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant work experience



    • At least seven (7) years in a professional software engineering role
    • At least three (3) years of experience in object oriented or service oriented architecture
    • At least five (5) years of experience working with relational, structured or non-structured databases
    • Expert knowledge of all phases of the SDLC
    • Proven capabilities across multiple technologies or expert knowledge in one or more existing Meridian technologies
    • Application integration experience is required
    • Demonstrated experience with multiple architecture methodologies
    • Health care IT experience is preferred



    • Demonstrated problem solving skills
    • Extensive experience building enterprise or high performance applications
    • Extensive experience in web based UI or service oriented architectures is preferred
    • Experience in all of the following: application development best practices, SDLC, code reviews, source control management, and unit testing



    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proven ability to mentor and lead
    • Detail oriented
    • Ability to adapt to changing technologies
