    A Day in the Life of a System Operations Engineer:

     

    Supports, monitors, tests, and troubleshoots all hardware and software related to Linux environment.  Works with outside vendors as well as internal engineering team to deliver new systems and services as well as ensure 99.999% system uptime.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure
    • Determine the policies for the system backups on internal and external network servers
    • Design and support server systems and supporting software
    • Configure fault tolerance systems (sans, backup servers, etc.)
    • Provide system security in order to safeguard information on systems
    • Provide guidance for security best practices as they relate to Linux
    • Monitor network performance and coordinate systems maintenance
    • Perform hardware and software troubleshooting
    • Manage and optimize server performance for capacity planning in order to ensure resources that meet the users demand
    • Install new releases, updates and patches for Linux servers
    • Create plans for server backup and restoration for the execution of Disaster Recovery Plans, if necessary
    • Familiarity with Linux servers with MS Active Directory integration
    • Test and evaluate software and hardware products in order to applicability and value to the organizations operations
    • Ensure test regions are available for all systems and applications to be used by system programmers and operations personnel
    • Experience working with a request management system
    • Solid knowledge with VMWare technologies and infrastructure and are familiar with DRS, vMotion, HA, Fault Tolerance, Affinity Rules, NSX
    • Serve as the escalation point for 24x7 support
    • Maintain good housekeeping and a safe working environment in the Server Room and associated storage areas
    • Perform other duties as assigned

     

    Qualifications

    What you can bring to Meridian:

     

    Education

    • Associate’s degree in computer related area is required
    • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
      • Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

     Experience:

    • Extensive experience working medium to large data centers is required
    • A minimum of two years’ experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux is required
    • Experience with the design, planning, implementation, and maintenance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Servers is required
    • Experience with Apache, Tomcat and MySQL are desired
    • Experience with Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery are desired

     

    Knowledge:

    • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures as they relate to building high performance business-critical enterprise systems
    • Working knowledge of security best practices

     

    Skills:

    • Excellent troubleshooting and technical documentation skills
    • Designing and supporting server systems and supporting software

     

    Abilities:

    • Competent to work independently at the highest technical level
      • Ability to collaborate with other IT Professionals to achieve common project goals
    • Able to work on multiple assignments/priorities in a deadline-driven environment
